A BRIEF HISTORY OF FRANKLIN PRIMARY HEALTH CENTER, INC.

The Franklin Primary Health Center is a non-profit corporation.   Initially, it was established in 1975 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for quality health care in the Davis Avenue community (now Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue community).  The group established a Board of Directors and became incorporated in the State of Alabama on January 31, 1975.   Franklin applied for and received funding under the Section 330 Community Health Center program in 1979.    The Davis Avenue Community is a densely populated community (as surveyed by the Mobile City Planning Commission in a publication dated September, 1969) and has been the center point of the economically depressed Black population of Mobile for many years.      The first center was named after Dr. James Alexander Franklin, Sr., a retired physician, humanitarian, and scholar who served Mobile’s African American communities with dedication and unselfishness for 60 years.  In fact, it would not be unusual for Dr. Franklin to see and serve as many as 100 patients in a single day; a work ethic unheard of in this day and time.

The clinic was initially staffed with volunteer physicians, nurses, technicians, Administrative personnel, and Block Health Workers.  Many doctors and nurses from the community, medical students and nursing students from the University of South Alabama volunteered their support.

In October 1978, an application for federal assistance was submitted to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and received in June of 1979.

From the beginning, Franklin’s focus has been on the needs of the medically underserved populations.  Since its inception, Franklin has experienced rapid growth and has consistently received commendations for high quality, comprehensive services and cost conscious fiscal management in its respective communities.  In fact, Franklin was the first Community Health Center in the State of Alabama to receive accreditation from the Joint Commission.

Today, Franklin Primary Health Center is comprised of ten area community-based health centers.  The health centers are located in the inner city of Mobile, as well as in Baldwin and Choctaw counties.   Franklin recently opened a new, state of the art, 40,000 square foot Medical Mall – the community’s first and only “one stop shopping” mall for medical services.    With over 30 providers, including physicians, dentists, optometrists, nurse mid-wives & nurse practitioners and 230 employees, Franklin Primary Health Center is a critical component of the health care safety net in the community.  If it were not for Franklin, many uninsured and underserved people in need of quality medical care would have no where else to go, or would face major barriers to getting the health care services that they need.    Franklin is proud of its legacy as established by Dr. Marilyn Aiello, founder, in the name of Dr. James Alexander Franklin, Sr.  It is Dr. Franklin’s legacy that Franklin honors each day as it serves approximately 40,000 patients per year with the same care, love, and commitment to serving people.    Services Offered:  Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Family Practice, Optometry, Dentistry, Radiology, Laboratory, Medical Social Work & Case Management, Pharmacy, Compassionate Use Medication Program, HIV/AIDS Prevention, Education and Testing, Infectious Disease Clinic, Nutrition Services and Substance Abuse Treatment.
